July 26, 2017
DEWAN AT-TABARI
INSTRUCTORS: MS NUR SURIA BT MAT SETAMAM
             MADAM ROZITA BT MOHAMMAD
             SIR AHMAD FARIS

WHAT IS NOTE TAKING?

Note taking is writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our own words. Here are three types of note taking strategies:

1.Before Class
🌹Review the notes from the day before
🌹Review your reading assignments
🌹Sit where you can easily see and hear
🌹Turn of your cell phone to reduce distractions
🌹Have all of your materials(stationery)
🌹Select the note taking system  that works best for you

2.During Class
🌹Identify the main topic
🌹Listen actively and focus clearly on the presentation
🌹Use abbreviates to increase the speed of  your writing
🌹Record when the instructor emphasizes main  ideas or details

3.After Class
🌹Compare notes with a classmate to check  your own notes accuracy
🌹Review and edit your notes to fill in any missing details
🌹Check your notes against your textbook
🌹Review your notes within 24 hours and before the next class

WHY STUDENTS SHOULD BE TAKING NOTES?
  • Helps us to pay attention in class
  • Helps to improve our memory
  • Helps us to take ownership of ideas
  • Helps us engage our senses
  • Helps the lecturers test student on how well they captured given information
WHY REVIEW NOTES?
We tend to lose 80% of what we hear if it's not reviewed within few hours. As students, we should identify any question for peers, the next class or to ask the professor. There's not enough time to digest all the information given in class if it's not reviewed on a regular basis.

HOW DO WE TAKE NOTES?
1.Date and label notes
2.Give yourself space to write
3.Use abbreviations and symbols
4.Use an outline to show :
  - main ideas
  - supports
  - examples
5.Use your own language

KEY ACTIONS TO NOTE  AS YOU OBSERVE YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR INSTRUCTOR ISN'T TOO INTERESTING? HERE ARE SOME TIPS:
  • When you notice your attention is slipping, pay attention to the act of writing.
  • Ask questions.
  • Volunteer for demonstrations and discussion.
  • Sit in front of the room - it has been proven that students who sit close to the front are more likely to do better on tests.
Cornell Note Taking
The Cornell Notes system is a note taking system devised in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University.
The Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes. Here are some examples:

Outlining
Dash or indented outlining is usually best except for some science classes such as physics or math.Creating an outline before writing your paper will make organizing your thoughts much easier. Here are some examples:

Mapping Method
Mapping is a method that uses comprehension or concentration skills and evolves in a note taking form which relates each fact or idea to every other fact or idea.Examples:
Sentence Method
Write every new thought, fact or topic on a separate line.It is more organized than the paragraph.Use when the lecture is somewhat organized, but heavy with content which comes fast.
HOW DO WE REVIEW AFTER A CLASS?
  • Review notes along with the book
  • Create your own examples
  • Discuss and compare notes with your classmates
  • Re-write notes
  • Practice those skills that you wish to develop
  • Ask professor for clarification
REMEMBER SQ4R!
THANK YOU FOR READING...
